SB9 IMPLEMENTATION UPDATE
HI All,
Just a quick update on our draft motion for the implementation of SB 9.
Starting in late October, we worked hard and quickly with several council member’s planning staff to get this motion voted on by the City Council. The motion was finally moved and seconded on Dec1 by Koretz, Blumenfield, and Raman. It was assigned to the PLUM committee which quickly waived it out of committee and it went to CM Nury Martinez on Monday. We felt we had the votes to pass this motion. As quickly as everyone was moving, President of the City Council Martinez’s office did not prioritize this motion. It was not agendized for the last meeting of the year, Wednesday, Dec 8. We, therefore, lost the opportunity to have Planning implement some safeguards which the State allows before SB 9 goes into effect on January 1, 2022.
Being disappointed can hardly express how we feel. This was an opportunity, granted by the State, to address locally some of the impacts of SB 9. Our City did not act on our behalf. We should continue to send letters and Community Impact Statements from neighborhood councils supporting this motion so that we don’t allow them to forget about it in the new year. All our community groups need to contact their council members. We are surrounded by cities that have already implemented a similar motion in their cities.
A letter of disappointment should be sent directly to CM Nury Martinez. Her office did not facilitate the moving of this motion to the full City Council. As with previous motions that involved SB 9 & SB 10 she has consistently stopped them from going to the full council in a timely manner. We must ask her to prioritize this motion in the legislative session that begins on January 7, 2022.
What happens to our communities should matter to our council members.
Thanks to many of you that have already posted letters with the City Clerk, let’s hold our council members accountable for getting this motion voted on quickly.
